You had me at bacon

It’s been a crazy couple of years and this year doesn’t seem to be any different. Even if you don’t follow the news it’s hard to miss that prices are going up and sometimes you can’t find what you’re looking for.

Our next batch of hogs is going to market in just a couple weeks. This is your best time to get a freezer full of outdoor raised pork. We raise our hogs outside, with deep bedding, and lots of fresh air and water. Our hogs have the qualities of 3 outstanding breeds. Berkshire for outstanding taste, Duroc for taste and growth, and Landrace for long bodies and lots of babies.

Why buy a whole/half?

Lock it in: A whole hog will yield you around 140 lbs of pork for your freezer. Our price for a whole hog is $2.25 / lbs plus processing. Buying in bulk can save you money if you have the freezer space for a whole hog. Not only will you lock in the price but you’ll have (potentially) a year’s supply of pork for whatever this year has in store for us. A half hog is $2.75/ lbs plus processing and will be around 70 lbs of meat.

Your cuts, your way: Another benefit of buying your pork in bulk, aside from saving money, is getting the cuts you want from the processor. While the whole hog isn’t bacon (wouldn’t that be something) you can get bone in chops if you want or do the boneless and get a different cut of ribs. (It’s pretty fascinating how the butchers can get different retail cuts from each “primal” cut of a hog.

Peace of mind: Having a full pantry/ freezer/ or fridge is a good feeling. A hog is one of the most cost effective ways to buy bulk meat.  Quarter cow will cost about the same but provide less meat to take home. (and cows don’t have bacon so there’s that)

If you’re thinking about ordering a hog but have questions, let us know. The cost of a half is a little more than a whole so if you have a friend or relative who’s interested in buying in bulk we’d suggest going in for a whole hog with them and splitting the cost.

Keep an eye out for our pastured chickens this summer and turkeys this fall.
